SV Werder Bremen is a historic German football club founded in 1899 and based in the northern city of Bremen. Known for its long-standing presence in the Bundesliga, the club has built a strong identity through sustained top-flight participation, ranking third in the all-time Bundesliga table. The club is also known for its passionate supporter culture and fierce rivalry with northern neighbours Hamburger SV. Werder Bremen’s iconic green and white have become defining symbols of the club’s tradition and pride within German football.
This concept kit project explores how Werder Bremen’s heritage and regional identity can be reinterpreted through a contemporary design lens. The design process focused on balancing tradition with modern refinement, using the club’s established colour palette alongside subtle graphic details inspired by Bremen’s setting and cultural context. The resulting kits aim to respect the club’s history while presenting a clean, modern visual direction suited to contemporary football kit design.
The Werder Bremen home, away, and third kit concepts form a cohesive set that interprets club heritage, regional symbolism, and modern design through a unified visual system.
The Werder Bremen home shirt concept stays true to tradition with a green base and a classic diamond pattern inspired by the club badge. A bold geometric motif overlays the lower two-thirds of the front, repeating the key bit shape from Bremen’s coat of arms. This pattern references the Weser Renaissance façades of Bremen City Hall and the tidal flows of the Weser River.
The diamond pattern continues on the back, with the player name and number set boldly in white. Lebenslang Grün-Weiss (“Green-White for Life”) is embroidered below the collar, reinforcing the club’s supporter culture. White detailing appears throughout the shirt, while orange accents on the collar, sleeve cuffs, and sponsor logo reference Werder Bremen’s early-2000s era kits.
As part of this project, the SV Werder Bremen club badge has been redesigned to balance heritage with modern refinement. The design retains the club’s traditional green and white colour palette, iconic diamond shape, and the gold star representing its four Bundesliga titles.
At the centre of the badge, the classic ‘W’ is reinterpreted through a geometric form inspired by the key bit shape from Bremen’s coat of arms. A historic-style football icon is positioned off-centre within the ‘W’, referencing the club’s founding in 1899, when a group of 16-year-old students won a football in a tug-of-war tournament. As a final detail, the year of foundation is subtly placed in the lower corner of the diamond, reinforcing the club’s deep-rooted history.
